Question
Why is platinum more expensive than white gold?
Answer
The world price of platinum has generally always been more than the price of gold. Platinum and gold also have two very different properties that affect pricing.
In the case of two visually identical rings– one made of white gold and one made of platinum–
- The platinum ring will weigh more, and so be priced accordingly. Platinum weights 60% more than 14K gold.
- The platinum will contain a higher percentage of fine metal resource. 14K gold is about 58% pure gold, whereas platinum is about 90% platinum.
The good news is that both metals are wonderful for jewelry, and have a beautiful glow when polished to a high luster.
Wishing you a brilliant day!
