Question

What makes diamonds different colors?

Answer

Believe it or not, diamonds come in almost every color in the rainbow. Most all diamonds have tones of yellow or brown. Diamonds are pure crystallized carbon. However, nature will sometimes combine trace elements and that is what makes diamonds different colors.  Nitrogen makes diamonds yellow and brown. The Hope diamond is blue.  This is caused by the trace element of boron. The Dresden Green diamond is green.  Green is caused by natural radiation during a diamond’s formation.

In order of rarity, yellow diamonds are followed by brown, colorless, blue, green, black, pink, orange, purple, and red.  The highest price paid for a deep ruby red diamond was $880,000 in 1987.  The diamond weighed less than one carat.
