Life Adventures, Why Mom Deserves A Diamond

First Mother’s Day Diamond Contest, by Dorothy Jean

I remember the day in May 1993, when I was interviewing jeweler Michael (Diamond Mike) Watson about his very first Why Mom Deserves a Diamond® contest.

Just then, a teenager from Edison High School walked into the store with her mother. They came to pick up the first prize – an unmounted quarter-carat diamond the girl had won for her mother by writing the best entry.

I don’t know who was more excited: the girl, her mother, Michael or I. All I know is that I still feel tingly recalling that moment.

For the past five years, it’s been my pleasure to report on the annual Mother’s Day competition Michael conducts throughout Orange County’s public and private schools. By now, he and his wife, Carmen, and I are old friends.

I sponsor the contest to encourage children to think and write about how they appreciate their moms,” says Michael, who for 20 years, search for his birth mother. “Although reared by a wonderful, loving adoptive mom, I never knew my biological mother. Unfortunately, she died before I learned of her whereabouts.”

This year, Michael and Carmen Watson are the winningest of them all. The couple expected their first child around the first of May. On St. Patrick’s Day, Carmen gave birth to a beautiful Diamond, Michaela Maria, six weeks prematurely. Mother, father and baby are doing fine. I’m told Michaela is a real jewel!
